On the Road Culinary Adventures tour with Bunkycooks blogger Gwen Pratesi coming to Kentucky in September

One of the more ambitious Internet culinary phenomenons is coming to Kentucky next month.

On the Road Culinary Adventures, based in Atlanta, has selected Kentucky as the destination for its next culinary tour, a tour that will include presentations by chefs Michael Paley, Anthony Lamas, Ouita Michel, as well as top foodie destinations including farms and restaurants.

This is kind of insider stuff, but those who know about this know Pratesi’s Bunkcooks blog and the tour are big deals.

The tour is a non-profit enterprise meant to get adventurous gourmands up close and personal with America’s new generation of farmers, vintners and distillers.

Pratesi wrangles for her intimate tours – the Kentucky trip is limited to 20 people – access to the best chefs,  farms, vineyards, distilleries and other destinations.

The Kentucky tour runs from Sunday, Sept. 18 through Tuesday, Sept. 20 focusing on the region’s farm-to-table culture in the Louisville and Lexington areas.

Woodland Farms, where 21C Museum Hotel and Proof on Main partners Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson raise bison for their Kentucky Bison Company, is on the itinerary, as is Stone Cross Farm dairy and beef operation near Taylorsville.

On the Road in Kentucky will also feature top Lexington-based restaurateur/Chef Ouita Michel, who owns three restaurants in the Lexington area including Holly Hill Inn.

Any who, here are the dates and schedules:

Sunday, Sept. 18:

Wine and cheese reception with Executive Chef Michael Paley of Proof on Main.

Dinner at Proof on Main with wine pairings

Monday Sept. 19:

Chef Anthony Lamas, owner of Seviche, will be the “tour guide,” according to the Bunkychefs website. Monday includes tours of Woodland Farm and Kentucky Bison Company outside Louisville in Goshen, Ky.

Woodland Farms manager Kristopher Kelly is scheduled to talk about challenges farmers face, how bison are raised and cared for and why bison meat is so different from other meat.

From there, On the Road is scheduled to travel to the Lexington area for a tour of Woodford Reserve distillery with Chris Morris, Brown-Forman Corp. master distiller. At Woodford Reserve, there will be a lunch and cooking demonstration by four-time James Beard Foundation Best Chef Southeast semi-finalist Michel.

From Lexington, the tour moves on to a farm visit at Stone Cross Farm and Cloverdale Creamery near Taylorsville where Patrick and Lita Kennedy raise beef and pork. Their creamery also supplies gourmet cheeses to most of Louisville’s top restaurants.

Dinner with wine pairings Monday night will be at Seviche featuring Lamas, a two-time James Beard Foundation Best Chef Southeast semi-finalist.

Tuesday, Sept. 20:

Tuesday is devoted to a cooking class and lunch with Paley at Proof on Main

(Personal expenses and incidentals are not included, according to a news release.)

The hotel for On the Road will be 21C Museum Hotel.

Early booking is $700 per person through which includes double occupancy hotel accommodations and taxes. Prices are also available for single occupancy.

On the Road is probably a bit rich for most of us. But on her Bunkycooks website, Pratesi states she’s “negotiated the best pricing available for this trip …. Our own personal journeys have changed our lives. We have designed this trip to have a profound impact on the way you think about the people and places behind our food.”
