(Editor’s Note: This post was updated at 11:30 am on May 1. The Ben Sollee concert location has changed due to inclement weather. The concert will now be held at Heine Bros. Douglass Loop, 2200 Bardstown Road.)
Ben Sollee is scheduled to play a free concert tonight to mark the release of the cellist/singer/songwriter’s new album, “LIVE at The Grocery on Home” (Atlanta, GA).
The performance will be at Heine Brothers’ Coffee shop at Bardstown Road and Douglass Loop, 2200 Bardstown Road.
“LIVE at The Grocery on Home” will be available exclusively at Heine Brothers’ Coffee.
“We’ll just have to shoehorn everyone inside,” May said. “This is just so weather-dependent.”
The performance starts at 7 p.m., and Mays recommends being “early/on time as this will be a 30 minute show!”
(Note: Beer and wine are now available at this HB store. More about that in a later post.)
As part of the album rollout, Sollee’s record company – Louisville-based sonaBLAST! Records – is releasing three videos.
The first video looks at how the “Live at The Grocery on Home” cover was produced by hand on a letter press by Hound Dog Press in NuLu, part of a “merchandise that matters” campaign.
This week’s video explains the thinking behind how sonaBLAST! Records is rolling out a limited release CD of “LIVE at The Grocery” in addition to the digital download.
More about “Merch that Matters” from one of sonaBlast! Records founder Gill Holland’s famously oblique emails:
“We are trying to start a national discussion on the idea of physical content in a post-record store world … how that relates to the idea of free content online, etc. and what makes art/music special ….”
In the Youtube video, Holland says he always wonders if every album will be the last CD sonaBLAST! physically prints.
sonaBLAST! exec Jaxon Swain chimed in that Sollee’s vision for the album was to create a physical product people could appreciate instead of “a digital file or a haphazardly mass produced CD.”
Each CD comes with a gift copy – a second copy of the CD in its own sleeve, meant to be given away to friends and family.
The CDs were produced in a very limited run and can only be purchased from Heine Brothers and bensollee.com.
The album will be available digitally everywhere starting today.
Sollee just returned from touring Australia, and he’s scheduled to swing through Louisville on his way to a concert at the Square Room in Knoxville.
Sollee has collaborated with multiple local and national artists including My Morning Jacket front man Jim James since NPR’s Morning Edition named him one of the “Top Ten Great Unknown Artists of 2007.”
