LIBA, Grasshoppers and LVAA putting on fourth Buy Local First Fair Sunday, May 20 at the Louisville Water Tower

Add this mega-event to all the spring fests and the save the mountains concerts (busy May!).

Louisville Independent Business Alliance, in collaboration with Grasshoppers Distribution and the Louisville Visual Arts Association,  is putting on the fourth annual Buy Local First Fair Sunday, May 20, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event is at the Louisville Water Tower at Zorn Avenue and River Road, HQ for LVAA.

And this is a signature Louisville event, with many of the pioneers of the locavore/buy local movement including Lilly’s Chef Kathy Cary, brewers, artists and farmers.

The local business showcase will have more than 100 booths, with offerings from local businesses, musicians, artist and craftsmen, breweries, coffee houses, chefs, community organizers, and farmers. (A complete list of vendors as of May 9 is at the end of this post.)

The idea is to connect patrons of local agriculture and local arts “in a celebration of Louisville’s vast selection of unique, homegrown agriculture, retail, service industry, and arts and culture offerings,” according to a news release.

Events include:

  • a concert featuring “Members of Vessel”
  • an Iron Chef competition including Chef Kathy Cary of Lilly’s vs. Chef Mitch Prensky from the St. Charles Exchange;
  • a Grasshoppers Distribution farmers market;
  • a fine art and craft market;
  • a ValuMarket craft beer tent featuring all local breweries;
  • the PNC Bank Kids Activity area;
  • art installations;
  • all-local food and beverage vendors;
  • an exhibition of Children’s Fine Art Classes artwork.
From the release:

This event is part of LIBA’s, Grasshoppers’ Louisville Visual Arts Association’s mission to support the local food movement. The synergy of local artists, craftsmen, and locally produced food is one that is important to both the providers and consumers. It falls in line with the ideals of Louisville’s Healthy Hometown Campaign, which includes Mayor Greg Fischer’s support of farmers’ markets as well as the Farm to Table program which connects regional farmers with Louisville’s families and businesses.

Sponsors include: Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh, PNC Bank, WAKY 103.5, Amish Hills Furniture, Heine Brothers’ Coffee, Oak Street Production, Preston Arts Center and ValuMarket.

Admission is free, but concessions are cash only.

Parking is $5 per car, free for bicycles.
