Honey, It’s The Weekend: Whiskey Bent Valley Boys and Elenowen Friday, Shins at Iroqouis Amphitheater and lots more

by Michael Tierney

Whiskey Bent Valley Boys

The Shins are in town this weekend, and many alternative-music listeners will be finding themselves out at the intimate Iroquois Amphitheater.

For those with lighter pockets, or those who have no idea who The Shins may be, don’t worry! There is plenty to do this weekend in Louisville.

If I wanted to have the most fun possible this weekend, I would set sail in one of these directions:

• Whiskey Bent Valley Boys @ Zazoo’s, Friday, June 8

Louisville being a cultural hodgepodge allows for such wonderful experiences. And while we may strive to look as cosmopolitan, metro, retro, indie as possible … it is hard to completely bury our southern pride, tendencies and traditions. If you have no idea what I am talking about, you have to experience The Whiskey Bent Valley Boys from Pewee Valley.

Good live blues-folk-rock’n-bluegrass music in the middle of St. Matthews? Yes. Those whose imagination remains intact will feel connected to a yesterday Kentucky. One of line-dancing, hooting, hollering , moonshine and outlaws. What Whiskey Bent Valleys Boys will relentlessly dig into your heart and make it dance because they possess the energy, soul and groove to make dancing simply irresistible.

Don’t worry because line-dancing experience is not required!

Salsa dancers can be intimidating to join the floor with, but when you see this crowd arm-in-arm swinging each other around in circles, beer in hand, you will certainly want to join in on the fun. You may even shed a tear for the beautiful moment of communal fun, the old way of fun. Jolly and cheerful was the fun of the non-digital age. Old fun and a very new world, it’s priceless.

Whiskey Bent will provide this unique Louisville experience at Zazoo’s. Probably starting around 10:30. Joel Timothy kicks off the night at nine and The Grace Adele and the Grand Band are headlining.

 • Elenowen @ Uncle Slayton’s, Friday, June 8

The American music scene likes three things at the moment. Dance, blues and a damn good voice. From Adele to the Civil Wars back to The Weekend, Americans are screaming out loud for their desire of great harmonics. We want to hear something real and feel something real. There has been an overhaul of over-produced, over-digitized pop song and vocals sound and feel like Haley Joel Osment in AI.

Not Human.

There is nothing more human. More real. Than the sounds, emotions and feelings provided via Elenowen.

The duo is sexy, the duo is haunting, the duo is extremely talented. Lovers could not handle any more vibrato than these two will provide.

Steamy.

The atmosphere will be electric, because if you do find your way to this show, you are after one feeling. To hear, feel and believe in Love.

You’ll find it at Uncle Slayton’s Friday night.

Shins @ Iroqouis Ampitheater, Saturday, June 9

The Shins are touring in support of their new album, “Port of Morrow.” From “Caring is Creepy” back in 2007 to “Simple Song,” the Shins have defined quirky Indie pop and inspired like a gazillion cheap imitators.

Gate opens at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 and available for purchase at Ticketfly.com

• Louisville Film Society Presents: “The Unknown,” live with Seluah Saturday, June 9 at Headliners Music Hall

This weekend’s most intriguing event is a creative collaboration. The Louisville Film Society has matched Tod Browning’s “The Unknown” with the haunting sounds of Louisville electronic-music wonders Seluah as part of the Flyover Film Festival.

Both Browning and Seluah are Louisville-grown.

Seluah was tagged as a killer “psy-dub” experience by the late Ear X-Tacy. The band is as eclectic as their hometown. It’s creepy, it’s fun and it is unique.

What else could you ask for?

There are dark themes in Seluah’s sound and lyricism. Matching perfectly with their film counterpart Tod Browning.

Browning is most famous for his interpretation of Stoker’s “Dracula. “The creepy, silent, terrifying Dracula we all picture when thinking about the famed fanged being. Usually resembles closest to the one that was conceived by one of Louisville’s very own.

Pretty cool, huh?

The show starts at 10 p.m.

Seluah will play along to one of Browning’s other films, “The Unknown.” The silent film is a cult classic within the realm of true film fanatics. It is an unprecedented film, one that delivers the same punch it did almost a hundred years ago.

An event where two Louisville minds coming together. Browning in the world of past, Seluah in the world of now.

How weird, how cool, how… Louisville.

Goin’ down to Headliners Saturday? Get there a little bit before ten!
