We’re for anything that gets kids outside and away from computer screens and TVs.
(Operating against our best interests, we know. But there is the reality that an estimated 25 percent of American children are not just fat, but obese.)
Here’s an organization doing something about this trend.
The City of Douglass Hills is organizing the Kids TRY-athlon, scheduled for Sun., July 29 at Douglass Hills Swimming Pool, 501 Gatehouse Ln. just outside Middletown.
(Registration closes Wed., July 25 at midnight.)
The goal of TRY-athlon is to promote children’s love for sports and physical activity, according to a news releases. Organizer Nikki Weis, a mother of three, is an advocate for keeping children healthy and fit, according to the release.
“We did a children’s triathlon this past fall and my children loved it,” Weis stated in the release. “Being that Louisville did not offer many triathlons for kids at the time, my oldest son said I should put one on. Here we are almost a year later hosting our first event.”
TRY-athalon is designed for children ages 6 years old to 14 years old, according to a news release.
The TRY-athalon competition will be split into three age groups competing at different distances.
• Kids 6 to 8 will have a 50-yard swim, a 2.4-mile bike, and a .5-mile run.
• Ages 9 to 10 will have a 100-yard swim, a 3.2-mile bike and and 1-mile run.
• The eldest group, ages 11 to 14, will swim 200 yards, bike 5.6 miles and run 1.4 miles.
There will be an informal information session on Sat., July 21 at the Race Site at Douglass Hills Swimming Pool from 9 a.m. to 11 am. Kids and parents are invited to check out the site and ask questions before race day.
