Honey, it's the Weekend: A sensational July continues with Moon Taxi, Coralee & the Townies, the Pass and Figure
July was quite the month in Louisville.
Scorching heat reigned down, the Trolley Hop got rolling again, and, of course, Forecastle Festival instilled many awesome memories into thousands of music lovers.
But what now???
Luckily, here in Louisville, you can always count on a little fun ….
More than a year ago, I sat in the University of Kentucky’s Wildcat Den. There were two bands playing in the small venue and one of them was Louisville’s very own, The Pass.
My expectations were low for any band playing a concert surrounded by video games, ping-pong tables and a popcorn maker. Fortunately for my friends and me, we were in for an awesome surprise.
Many showed up for the band dressed in neon, sporting glow sticks, expecting a lot of fun and dancing, which was exactly what The Pass provided.
The Pass is entertaining, slightly cheesy, electro-rock-n-roll at its finest. There is a carefree atmosphere of fun, light-heartedness and puppy love at a Pass show and it is easy to know why you hear the band’s sound:
The Pass enforce heavy rhythm patterns, utilize nifty synth work and produce a sound that is reminiscent of some of the best 80’s British Synth-Pop. The band also reminds me of hipster favorite, The Strokes. So, if you are looking to dance your way into August without a care in the world, I recommend heading to Z-bar on Saturday.
Check out the band’s newest release here.
The show starts at 9 p.m. with support from Sonen.
P.S. The Pass is shooting a video today, and you can be in it! Here’s the info.
- Coralee & The Townies @ Uncle Slayton’s on Saturday, July 28
Lexington superstars Coralee & the Townies are heading back to Louisville and have found the perfect venue for themselves in Uncle Slayton’s.
The venue has been booking some amazing acts in the acoustic-folk genre, and they have landed a gem in Coralee and the Townies. Coralee and the band flaunt everything that is wonderful about good ole’ Kentucky music: bluesy, soulful, honky-tonk, country and downright kick-ass vocals. The band will rock you, sock you and do it all with a smile…
Uncle Slayton’s level of sexiness Saturday will be unprecedented due to Coralee’s & The Townies charm, sound and good nature; leading to the perfect environment for girls to share the love, men to be impressed and couples to share something adventurous together.
Coralee is one of those singers that you enjoy listening to in between songs just as much as you enjoy getting hit by her pipes and the band’s soul-driven funk. Sometimes lady bands can become such a drag, but this band will make you feel as if it was June Carter’s first concert after she and Mr. Cash were married: an overload of excitement, giddiness and fun.
Louisville, if you have yet to meet these Lexingtonians, get yourself out to Uncle Slayton’s and see some of this great state’s finest. You’ll forget your tough day at work as soon as the first chord is strummed.
First band at 9 p.m.
- Figure @ The New Diamonds on Friday, July 27
Electronic producer Figure is coming back to Louisville on Friday at the New Diamonds on Barret Ave.
He will be accompanied by an overload of DJ’s spinning top forty mashups, house and other electronic-dance songs they had no part in making.
Figure has found success in the world of melody-lacking DUB-STEP, playing at a few festivals across the country. The popularity of electronic dance music was easily noticed at Forecastle; so if you are one of the many who enjoy the shock-filled boom-boom sounds of today’s punk-rock, sounds similar to some futuristic intergalactic battle, head down and get sweaty with Figure as he plays with half-time and full-time beats around 140 Beats Per Minute.
- Moon Taxi @ Cosmic Charlie’s on Friday, July 27
If you want some real music that will make you dance and sing along on Friday, take I-64 East to Lexington and head to Cosmic Charlie’s, the city’s best music venue. There you will find the recent Forecastle champs, Moon Taxi. The crowd was huge for the band on Forecastle on Sunday as the band’s popularity in the state grows exponentially. The band received high praise and several Forecastle-goers listed the boys right behind MMJ for their favorite set of the weekend.
If you were not at the Forecastle show, or have yet to discover the gold that is Moon Taxi, find out all you need here.
The days of seeing the band in small venues for under $20 could be coming to an end in the near future, so hop on board while the fun is cheap and uncontrollable.
