This is one of the many, many things we’re just not that familiar with. As in never heard of it.
But Courtney Sandora, our expert on all things social-media worthy and cool at Go Social Public Relations, says this is important.
Shine in Nulu is having master classes in Nia training Sunday, Aug. 12 through Thursdya, Aug. 16.
(Yes, this is the same Shine that’s the emerging building contractor and renovater of historic properties. Hugely successful The Silver Dollar on Frankfort Ave. is a Shine project. And Shine is an art gallery, of course, since it is in Nulu.)
For non-practitioners, Nia is “a holistic approach to exercise” – a mash up of martial arts, dance arts and healing arts, with nine types of classic movement forms all together, according to a news release. And at $15 per session, these sound like a crazy-good bargain.
From the release, courtesy of Ms. Sandora:
In the early 80’s, as step aerobics and leg warmers were taking
off, a counter movement was happening called Nia. Those who were
practicing Nia shed their shoes and the repetitive movements often
associated with aerobics and instead looked to reconnect with their
body and the idea of self-guided movement. Nia’s
founders believed firmly that it was through movement that people
could find health benefits including releasing tension, increasing
flexibility and building grace.
For those interested in learning more about Nia, Shine will host a series of Nia classes with Master Teacher Helen Terry. Terry will lead students through the Nia White Belt Training, the first level of a five-belt training series, according to the release.
(The White Belt Training can be an entryway into teaching Nia, or a starting point for becoming a master student.)
The cost: Sunday’s Special Event is $15 in advance and $20 the day of. All other classes are $15 to drop in.
Shine – the little Green Building behind Gill Holland’s big Green Building – is at 727 E. Jefferson St., with the entrance off the big Green Building parking lot for 732 E. Market St.
