A year in the life of a restaurant is like a year of life for a pet, the translation from a calendar year isn’t one-to-one. For dogs, one calendar year is equal to seven years of life, and one could argue that the ratio works for restaurants, too.

That alone makes Asiatique‘s 24-year run an impressive lifespan. However, it has come to an end, chef and owner Peng Looi, who himself is a staple of the Louisville culinary scene, confirmed to Insider Louisville.

The Asian fusion/small plates restaurant was located at 1767 Bardstown Road. The well-reviewed restaurant served everything from pork gyoza and duck nachos to ramen and masamman curry and shrimp bouillabaisse.

“My partner, Mr. Pabs Sembillo and I have decided to take a different direction after 24 years in operation,” Looi told Insider in a follow-up email. “It has been great fun but priorities change with time. As for me, I plan to spend more time with my family. Running two kitchens has certainly taken much of my time and would love to enjoy my family time.”

Looi will continue to cook at and run his other restaurant August Moon on Lexington Road, which turns 30 years old this year.

As for his Asiatique employees, he said, “The demand for highly trained staff is excellent in this city and am sure they have found employment elsewhere.”

On the online forum Louisville HotBytes Thursday night, Looi wrote:

All good things must come to an end. With a heartfelt gratitude, we announce the closure of Asiatique effective immediately.

To our guests, we thank you for giving us 24 great years. We appreciate and humbled by your patronage over the years.

We would also like to thank the many employees, past and present, who have contributed their time to help us.

According to one commenter on Louisville HotBytes, the restaurant had a sign on the door stating that they were taking a “much-needed rest” from Jan. 2-16. During that time, Looi made that decision to close Asiatique for good.

Asiatique is only the latest restaurant to close this year. Already, Insider has reported that Finn’s Southern Kitchen in Germantown, Over the 9 in Russell and Bendoya Restaurant and Sushi Bar downtown have closed.
