Rapid growth has returned to Spencer County after the recession of a decade ago, but it’s a proposed subdivision in southeastern Jefferson County that could have a major impact on a number of residents in Spencer.

A large housing development in the works in the Fisherville area could make the morning commute, which thousands of Spencer Countians make everyday to their jobs in Louisville, an even bigger headache than it already is, residents say.

Long Run Creek Properties, of Louisville, announced two years ago a proposal to develop 274 acres that front Taylorsville Lake Road. It refreshed the plans last fall as Insider reported. The development could ultimately mean the addition of 824 new homes, along with a small retail center.

A recent informational meeting was held in the community as developers outlined their proposed development, known as Covington by the Park. The development’s future may hinge on securing adequate sewer expansion, they said.

Residents voiced concerns about access roads and traffic with the addition of so many new homes, and drivers.

The meeting held late last month, included several members of the Fisherville Area Neighborhood Association, along with some from Spencer County.

Local real estate agent Tammy Stokes attended and shared some of what she learned on a Facebook post. She said most of the reactions were of great concern as to how the development will impact Spencer County.

“I can tell you I posted about the meeting and a picture of the subdivision plat. My post was shared 125 times. I did not see one positive comment,” said Stokes.

“I think the people of Spencer County will be greatly affected by the amount of increased traffic created by this subdivision,” said Stokes. “But if we want input, we need to show up at the meetings.”

The developers have applied for permits and other pre-construction papers through Louisville Metro Planning and Design. Public opposition may or may not have influence granting of those permits.

However, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has taken notice.

State Rep. James A. Tipton, R-53rd District, spoke at Monday morning’s Spencer County Fiscal Court meeting and mentioned the development as he described some of the major road projects that will address needs in that area.

He said the No. 1 priority project in the state of Kentucky is the widening of the Gene Snyder Freeway from Taylorsville Road to I-71. Spencer Countians who commute to work via that route can attest to the daily backups on the Snyder.

Tipton said the construction would surely bring some nightmares, but “in the long run, it will help with traffic flow.”

Spencer Countians also experience regular congestion on KY 155 heading toward the Gene Snyder Freeway, and Tipton said there are projects slated to help ease those problems as well.

He said there are plans to widen KY 155 from the curve (at the light) to the Snyder to three lanes. In addition, there are plans to widen the bridge over the creek at Pope Lick, and a meeting last summer discussed another proposed road that would link Fisherville to Eastwood, which could also include an additional interchange at I-64.

“These four Jefferson County projects, hopefully when implemented,” Tipton said “will help the citizens of Spencer County.”
