Blackbeard Espresso is joining the trend of food truck owners opening brick-and-mortar locations.

The coffee purveyor announced on Facebook that it’s opening at 718 W. Main St., across from the Kentucky Science Center.

Co-owner Adam Temple told Insider Louisville that he and his co-owner Stephen Young, like many food truck operators, wanted to open a stationary location for a long time but found a food truck to be a better option when they were first starting out.

“We knew that we wanted to open a coffee shop, and obviously, location is a big deal,” Temple said. “We wanted to have something that could be more of a full-time, permanent location. We are always going to be here.”

After four years of building up a customer base with the truck, selling coffee and espresso drinks, they found the right spot near museum row on Main Street. The 1,000-square-foot storefront will seat 14 to 20 between interior seating and outdoor bistro tables, and Temple said they expect to open sometime in the next couple of weeks but are still awaiting final inspections from the city.

In addition to its popular coffee drinks, Blackbeard Espresso is adding milkshakes, smoothies, and hot and cold teas from Louisville Tea Co. The business couldn’t sell blended drinks on the truck because its generator only has so much juice.

The brick-and-mortar store also will serve a broader variety of baked goods including muffins and scones — though Temple said they had not yet decided which Louisville baker those will come from — and some branded merchandise.

Once it opens, the hours of operation will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday. However, Temple said, the hours will be malleable.

Temple and Young plan to keep the truck running and will hire two to three part-time workers after they open to help run the truck and store.
