We get so many news releases about companies receiving awards that we can’t run them all. But this is different.
Louisville-based accounting firm Deming Malone Livesay & Ostroff has received the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility. We think this resonates with Insiders because a significant percentage of us work for startups, or for progressive companies that are rethinking workplace organization down to how and where people work.
Research is pretty clear that both employees and employer benefit when there’s balance between work and personal time.
The award is part of the national When Work Works project administered by Families and Work Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management.
At its core, workplace flexibility is about improving business results by giving people more control over their work time and schedules. Traditionally, flex meant variable hours. Today, when we say flex we are talking about an effective workplace where realistic work patterns meet the needs of both employers and employees. We call it workflex!
“Our research consistently finds that employees in effective and flexible workplaces have greater engagement on the job and greater desire to stay with their organization. In addition, they report lower stress levels and better overall health,” stated Ellen Galinsky, FWI president in the release announcing the awards.
Workplace flexibility — flextime, part-time work and compressed workweeks — has been shown to help businesses remain competitive while also benefiting employees, according to the release. Flexibility in combination with other aspects of an effective workplace such as education and supervisor support “can have a powerful impact on employee engagement and motivation.”
“Valuing and respecting our staff as ‘whole’ individuals, with varying needs for finding balance – mentally, physically, spiritually and financially – is a high priority for our leadership team,” stated Jennifer Hughes, DMLO president, in the release. “Offering flexibility and control of time is one of the most impactful ways we can empower our people for success.”
The Sloan Awards use a two-step selection process which involves an evaluation of employers’ flexibility programs and practices, and a confidential employee survey, according to the release.
Applicants are measured against national norms from the National Study of Employers.
