Papa John’s Pizza founder and CEO John Schnatter has resigned from the University of Louisville Athletic Association board, according to a UofL spokesman. However, Schnatter remains a board member of the university and the UofL Foundation.
Schnatter’s athletics board resignation comes two weeks after he publicly criticized athletics leadership, saying during a university board of trustees meeting, “Until you fix athletics, you can’t fix this university.”
Many construed his comments to be directed at UofL athletics director Tom Jurich, though Schnatter has repeatedly declined to elaborate on his statements, including at Wednesday’s board of trustees meeting.
According to social media reports, Jurich spoke to the athletics board Thursday morning and vehemently defended his leadership, while declining to share any reaction he had to Schnatter’s resignation.
UofL spokesman John Karman told IL that Schnatter resigned via email to trustees chairman J. David Grissom, but “no reason was given. He wished ULAA the best.” Karman added that university trustee James Rogers was appointed to replace Schnatter on the athletics board last week on April 21.
Athletics spokesperson Kenny Klein told IL that he did not know why Schnatter resigned from the board.
