JCPS board member Steph Horne

Jefferson County Board of Education member Steph Horne announced Friday that she will not run for another term in her District 3 seat.

“One of the greatest pleasures and honors in my life has been serving as an elected member of the Jefferson County Board of Education representing District 3,” said Horne in a statement to Insider. “While I will remain on the Board until the end of my term in January 2019, it is with a heavy heart that I must announce I will not be seeking re-election this November. I will continue to advocate for all students, families, and teachers in Jefferson County and throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky.”

Horne, a business owner and real estate attorney, was first elected to the JCPS school board in 2014.

The deadline for candidates to file for the soon-to-be open seat — as well as the seats for Districts 1, 6 and 7 — is next Tuesday, with the election in November. Current District 3 board member Lisa Willner is also not running for re-election, as she is the Democratic nominee for the state House District 35 seat this fall.

Horne has been rumored for months to be the potential running mate of state House Majority Leader Rocky Adkins if he runs for governor next year, though observers expect that he would not officially file for that race until the fall elections are over.
