commonwealth theatreWalden Theatre and the Blue Apple Players merged in 2015 and now are reintroducing themselves as Commonwealth Theatre Center, home of the Walden Theatre Conservatory and Blue Apple Outreach.

Both institutions were formed in 1976. Walden Theatre is an independent conservatory theater program offering training for Louisville-area students. Walden also offers outreach programming that had been similar to the work of Blue Apple Players, which produces educational plays in area schools.

The merger has led the nonprofit to pursue funding initiatives that neither organization could have pursued on their own. When they merged, the organization retained the theatre professionals, outreach teaching artists, and administrative staff from both Walden Theatre and Blue Apple Players.

Together they reach nearly 50,000 youth from all socioeconomic backgrounds and learning styles across 63 zip codes and serving more than 300 schools and community centers, including 83 percent of Title I schools in the Jefferson County Public School system.
