The Commission on Public Art is seeking input on where to move the controversial Confederate monument following a court ruling that gave the city permission to dismantle the 121-year-old structure near the University of Louisville’s campus and find a more appropriate location for it.
On Monday, July 25, the commission will hold a public meeting to receive comments on potential new sites for the monument. The meeting will take place at 10 a.m. in the Old Jail Auditorium, 514 W. Liberty St., and those wishing to speak will receive a maximum of three minutes to do so. The university and Mayor Greg Fischer announced their intention to deconstruct and move the monument honoring Confederate soldiers in April, noting that many view it as an insensitive tribute to the injustice of slavery in the South.
The removal of the monument was held up by a lawsuit and injunction filed by those who viewed doing so as disrespectful to those soldiers and a disservice to history, but the case was dismissed and injunction lifted by Jefferson Circuit Judge Judith McDonald-Burkman in June.
