At times, “Game of Thrones” can get quite bloody — especially since the writers don’t seem to care how big a name you are to axe your character. We assume this might be why a partnership between the HBO drama and the American Red Cross happened organically.

On Wednesday, April 17, the local chapter of the Red Cross is bringing you all the “GoT” goodness during the inaugural Mayor’s Give A Day Blood Drive. Anyone who shows up at the Kentucky International Convention Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day and gives blood will be entered to win an authentic, full-sized “GoT” iron throne and also receive a commemorative “Bleed for the Throne” poster.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood, and about 80 percent of blood donations come to the Red Cross through community blood drives like this one. The cause is an important one to Mayor Greg Fischer, which is why he’s making the event part of his Give A Day Week of Service.

“Donating blood is a gift of the heart and a true act of compassion,” he said in a news release. “I encourage our citizens to participate in this drive and throughout the year. You’ll be saving lives.”

Garry Allison, director of donor recruitment for the River Valley Blood Services Region, stressed that community partners play a vital role in maintaining the Louisville area’s blood supply.

“We appreciate Mayor Fischer’s leadership in encouraging the people of Louisville to give their time … to foster compassion in helping others,” he said in the release.

Donors will receive one of five limited-edition “GoT” posters while supplies last. KICC is located at 221 S. Fourth St.

Just remember, you won’t be able to donate blood if you have a cold or flu on Wednesday, if you’re iron deficient and/or if you’ve lived in or traveled to a malaria-risk country in the past three years. Also, some medications could rule you out as well. Other than that, if you’re at least 16, weigh at least 110 pounds and are feeling well, you’ll be good to give.
