Fresh Stops bring fresh, local food to Louisville neighborhoods.

The nonprofit New Roots will kick off the 2015 Fresh Stops season with four classes on food justice in different neighborhoods across Kentuckiana. The classes will educate communities on food insecurity and how the broken food system leads to food deserts and poorly nourished communities.

New Roots is hoping that more community members will be willing to work with them on creating even more Fresh Stops.

The Fresh Stop program pools communities’ SNAP benefits and helps fund the work of Kentucky farmers. In return, these participating communities get an increased share of the local, organic bounty, with volunteer-run Fresh Stop Markets serving as pick-up spots for the vegetables.

Fresh Stop Markets are set to open in June.

“The thing I like most about the Food Justice Classes is that it brings the community together,” Nathaniel Spencer, a New Roots Shawnee Neighborhood Fresh Stop Market leader, said in a news release. “We talk about how the community used to have fresh food growing in backyards and on the streets. We had stores on every corner. We need to have a frank and honest discussion about what caused the present situation of fresh food insecurity and work to solve it together.”

Through New Roots, more than 985 families pooled their SNAP Benefits and cash to purchase farm-fresh organic produce from Kentuckiana farmers in 2015.

  • West Louisville
    Thursday, March 31, 6 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3640 River Park Drive
  • Old Louisville/Smoketown
    Tuesday, March 29, 6 p.m. at First Unitarian Church, 809 S. 4th Street
  • New Albany
    Wednesday, March 30, 6 p.m. at the New Albany Housing Authority, 300 Erni Ave., New Albany, Ind.
  • Shively/Pleasure Ridge Park/Valley Station
    Tuesday, April 12, 6 p.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2304 Crums Lane
