Derby is over, so it’s time to plant that garden. But before you do, have a cocktail or two, support a great organization and get gardening tips and more at the YouthBuild Louisville Garden Party on Thursday, May 19.
YouthBuild is a nationwide program that has been active in Louisville since 2001. It seeks to provide education and training to low-income youth ages 16-24 who are neither in school nor have a job. There are several different vocational training programs, but the central program is construction.
Many students come to YouthBuild after having been through the court system. The program’s graduates have a 5 percent recidivism rate compared to the national rate of 51 percent.
At the Garden Party, you’ll be able to order YouthBuild-built garden products at a discount, taste food made by YouthBuild participants who are currently being mentored by Chef Edward Lee, and hear testimonials from a YouthBuild Environmental Education Conservation track participant.
There will also be local music, a talk on gardening, tours of the YouthBuild campus in Smoketown and cocktails.
Tickets are $30. The event is from 5-7 p.m., and attire is “spring outdoor cocktail.” YouthBuild is at 800 S. Preston St. You can order your tickets here.
