2 Dips & A Shake — the downtown ice cream parlor located next to Down One Bourbon Bar, which owns and operates it — has been closed for a few weeks due to renovations. But don’t think for a second its staff didn’t stay busy coming up with new ideas to bring in the crowds and further link the dessert spot with the bourbon bar.
On Thursday, March 24, 2 Dips reopens at 11 a.m. with two flavors from their brand new Select Distillers’ line of bourbon ice cream: Maker’s Mark Butterscotch Ripple and Maker’s 46 Butter Pecan. The first was made with the help of former Maker’s Mark president Bill Samuels Jr., while the latter was made with his son and current president, Rob Samuels.
Beth Burrows, general manager of Down One, says they partnered with the independently owned The Arctic Scoop off Hurstbourne to help create the ice cream. And they’ll also be serving popular Arctic Scoop flavors like chocolate malt, strawberry, coffee dark fudge swirl, cake batter and caramel sea salt brownie.
Burrows says she’s tried the two new flavors and they’re both amazing.
“The bourbon really pulls through in both,” she says. “And they are less than 1 percent alcohol, too, which makes them OK for everyone.”
If she had to pick a favorite, it would be the Butterscotch Ripple. Sorry, Rob.
“The Butterscotch Ripple is just vanilla, Maker’s Mark and butterscotch — super simple but amazing,” says Burrows. “It’s my favorite, I think. It’s a hard decision. I could eat more of the Butterscotch, so I suppose that is why it wins.”
While she’s not sure of the time frame on the next Select Distillers’ releases, Burrows says she does have confirmation from Chris Morris of Woodford Reserve and Old Forester, Wes Henderson of Angel’s Envy, and Dave Pickerell of WhistlePig to participate. She’s in the process of reaching out to others, as well.
To celebrate their new line of bourbon ice cream, 2 Dips and Maker’s Mark will be giving away U of L and UK-themed glassware to the first 90 customers who order a scoop on Thursday. Doors open at 11 a.m. And we hear Bill Samuels might even stop by for a scoop himself around 2 p.m.
