Although Halloween’s presence has been felt at big-box chain stores since shortly after the Fourth of July, it’s now the appropriate time to start decorating the yard with ghosts and snacking on candy corn. To help usher in the spooky season, Art Sanctuary is hosting a dark night of dark music and dark art on Saturday, Sept. 29.

The event will feature both the Dark Market, a group of vendors who gather to sell creepy, horror-themed arts and oddities, and Radio Arcane, a collective of deejays who lean toward synthesizer-based music. Participating deejays include Kaleidoscope, Thulsa Goon, Sorrow Vomit, Talamasca, Osiris Ani and special guest Brian Cole of Funeral Party Records.

And local artists who will be selling their nighttime oddities and werewolf-y wares include Ryan Case, Cricket Bidwell Meyer, Jada Lynn Dixon, Braxton Gaither, Lady Vanessa, Colleen Maeve, Fisher Williams, Yoko Molotov and many more.

To get some more details, we caught up with Lisa Frye, co-founder of Art Sanctuary, who offered up a clearer definition of dark music — sort of.

“Well, technically, it is music that generally falls under the genres of goth, elektro-industrial, EBM, synthpop, synth wave, postpunk, coldwave, darkwave, etc.,” she said. “However, to us, it is a way for our mortality to embrace fantasy.”

Frye said that in addition to the music and the art, Art Sanctuary will have a full bar serving up cocktails and beers in the 10,000-square-foot venue.

Radio Arcane and the Dark Market will haunt Art Sanctuary from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29. The event is for those 21 and older, and there will be a $5 cover after 10 p.m.

Art Sanctuary is located at 1433 S. Shelby St.
