ArtFM partyLast fall, ARTxFM, the 24-hour community-based Internet radio station, was granted a license to broadcast over the air at 97.1 WXOX. Now the station is raising funds to erect the broadcast tower and get it modulating. They have 18 months from the date the license was issued to raise the tower and get it working.

On Friday, Haymarket Whiskey Bar will host a fundraiser concert featuring a diverse lineup to help support the volunteer-staffed station’s efforts.

One of the hurdles the community radio station faces is that a lot of Louisvillians don’t know about it. So ARTxFM has been hosting small-scale fundraisers to raise name recognition. This event is purposely diverse. According to Michael Powell of Dopplegang Media, one of the organizers, “That was part of the strategy with this eclectic lineup — bring in a wide swath of folks with different sonic palettes.” He said they’re taking a page out of President Obama’s playbook by building excitement by raising funds in small increments.

Sharon Scott, general manager of ARTxFM, told us, “At this moment, our goal is membership — participation and long-term community support of this new radio station.  The funds raised at this Friday’s event will go directly to the purchase of our FM transmitter, antenna and supplemental equipment, but our larger goal with these live events is community engagement.” She also said she believes they can get the tower up much faster than the 18-month guideline.

The concert features:

  • Early Age — A new project featuring members of Young Widows, Second Story Man, Sandpaper Dolls, Mountain Asleep and more
  • Murals — Psychedelic folk and pop
  • Howell Dawdy — The comedic offshoot of Alex Smith’s Lydia Burrell
  • Montego — Instrumental hip-hop

And during the performances, visual art troupe Spettra will create “live and illuminating visuals.” There also will be a lineup of DJs spinning tunes in the front room and a free photo booth.

All this for a suggested donation of $8. Doors open at 8 p.m. POLLO, the new gourmet chicken truck, will be on hand to serve up some tasty grub. More information available about the fundraiser is on the event Facebook page. Haymarket Whiskey Bar is located at 331 E. Market St.

To warm you up (because I’m sure you need it) for the event, here’s a hilarious (and very satisfying, if you’ve seen or read “The Life of Pi”) video from Howell Dawdy.
