We’re more than halfway through January, and I’ve already heard from numerous people around town that they’ve given up on their diets. And even more surprising — or not — this “Dry January” nonsense is loosening its grip on health-conscience Louisvillians.

How do I know? Because my bars are more crowded than ever. I kinda enjoyed the extra elbow room I had these last few weeks, but just as gym attendance soars on Jan. 2 and wanes by Feb. 2, so, too, self-discipline erodes like a snowman in the rain.

Resolutions are abandoned on a park bench next to a weathered Werther’s wrapper that manages to catch a rare ray of sun, transmitting a spotlight that permeates your driver’s side window as you bypass the YMCA and steer your car toward Louisville Cream.

After years of feeling disappointed in myself for the numbers the scale viciously reported time after time, never once sharing good news, I decided to ban it from my house and focus on eating less and moving more. No crash diets, no counting everything I put into my mouth, no low-carb hubbub.

Just be kind to yourself — maybe don’t eat blocks of cheese for dinner, but no need to eliminate cheese from your diet completely. Wine with dinner? Sure. Maybe not the entire bottle, but one or two glasses. Beer with pizza? Why not? But let’s try it with thin crust and a light beer.

So how am I doing so far? Well, I don’t know because my scale is gone. What I do know is my pants are still tight, so either I need to move a lot more or my dryer is in cahoots with my scale.

So while I’ll be huffing and puffing in spin class and making less pit stops at Louisville Cream, here’s my annual list of calories, carbs and alcohol content in spirits.

There are a lot of mass-marketed domestic beers on this list, and that’s because they’ve done the science required to find this data. These are general guidelines, so find a similar beer to what you prefer and round up, most likely.

Cheers! And remember, St. Patrick’s Day is only 52 days away.
