As many sit glued to our television watching the horrors happening at the United States-Mexico border, one local store is fighting the injustices by joining forces with a national program aimed at sending money to the source.

Carmichael’s Bookstore is partnering with almost two dozen bookstores and small presses across the U.S. for #BookstoresAgainstBorders, an initiative that raises funds for the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), from July 5-7.

Ten percent of all sales over the weekend will be donated to RAICES, and the store also is taking donations. So far, Carmichael’s has raised $188, and organizers believe Louisville has a great chance to be near the top in contributions. (You can see all donations to #BookstoresAgainst Borders at this link.)

Bookstores Against Borders
Bookstores Against Borders is a nationwide initiative.

Jason Brown, store manager of the Carmichael’s on Bardstown Road, tells Insider the effort first began with A Room of One’s Own Bookstore in Madison, Wis., whose owners figured out all the logistics of gathering a team of independent bookstores across the country.

More and more are joining each day.

He says the decision to join the cause was easy.

“Like many people, we are moved by the stories and images coming from the Southern border,” says Brown. “Raising money for an organization that provides low-cost and free legal services to detained children and families is a small thing we can to do help the situation at the border become more humanitarian.”

Carmichael’s hopes to raise a lot of money through sales of all merchandise at both locations, including mugs, journals, cards, socks, puzzles and more. Brown says they’d also like to raise at least $1,000 in online donations as well.

#BookstoresAgainstBorders starts Friday, July 5, and continues through Sunday, July 7. Carmichael’s is located at 1295 Bardstown Road and 2720 Frankfort Ave.
