The Kentucky Derby picture changed dramatically last weekend with a determined victory by Classic Empire in the Arkansas Derby — the final important prep race for the Kentucky Derby on May 6. It was Classic Empire’s last big chance to re-establish his championship form of last season, and the horse got the job done with a stirring stretch drive.

Classic Empire — a horse this handicapper had pretty much tossed from consideration — is now likely to be the betting favorite in the 143rd Run for the Roses. It’s a good spot to be.

Favorites have won four straight Kentucky Derby races. But we think there are several other strong contenders to consider — and we won’t forget to mention them in this edition of Inside the Kentucky Derby…
