Picture 6We meant to remind you before now, but the deadline for Louisville Visual Arts Assocation’s big photo competition is drawing nigh.

And there’s some award money at stake here, as well as a considerable amount of career advancement as this is part of the 2013 Louisville Photo Biennial.

The LVAA’s 2013 LVAA Photo Competition is open to all Kentucky photographers, video, and film artists, as well to artists in the seven states bordering Kentucky.

The competition will be juried by Henry Horenstein of the Rhode Island School of Design, according to a news release.

Five awards are up for grabs. Juror-selected images from the competition will comprise The 2013 LVAA Photo Exhibit, and will be on display from October 4 through October 26, 2013 at LVAA’s PUBLIC gallery, 131 W. Main St.

Deadline for entries is August 1. Accepted entries will be announced August 22. The award ceremony is scheduled for October 10, according to the news release.

Now, for the fame and fortune part of the program:

• Best of Show: The winner will receive a one-person exhibit at PUBLIC gallery

• Second Place: $500 award

• There will be two Merit Awards: $250 each award, sponsored by Unique Imaging Concepts & LVAA Board of Directors.

• There will be one Merit Award for 30 and under: $250 Gift Card to Murphy’s Camera, sponsored by Murphy’s Camera,

Entry fee: $30 for up to three submissions (ages 31 or older), $20 for up to three submissions (ages 30 years old or younger).

About Henry Horenstein: Henry Horenstein has been a professional photographer, teacher, and author since the 1970s. He studied history at the University of Chicago before turning to photography, earning his BFA and MFA at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), while studying under legendary photographers Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Henry’s work is collected and exhibited internationally, and he has published over 30 books, including “Black & White Photography: A Basic Manual,” used by hundreds of thousands of college, university, high-school, and art-school students as their introduction to photography.
