Our news taps runneth over!

As if craft beer fans weren’t spoiled of late by the swelling number of options available, several local pub operators are adding new taste and tech twists sure to foam up the fun meter. The trick for me, however, is trying to stay apace with them all.

That’s made a bit easier by Louisvillebeer.com’s new calendar, which posts craft brew events around town. And for you, dear reader, I’ll make it even easier by listing a few events and elaborating with some details.

Yesterday (Sunday, Nov. 27), Bank Street Brewhouse in New Albany launched its Sunday brunch, which runs each Sunday henceforth from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Not only is alcohol served at 10 a.m. there (“three hours before Louisville,” as BSB loves to point out), in addition to its already fantastic beer, it has a bloody Mary bar where the wanton can craft their own tomato-and-vodka concoctions.

I’ve you’ve never been to Bank Street, put it on your list. When I reviewed it for Louisville magazine some time ago, it was more than solid.

Yet despite its owners’ connection to Rich O’s Public House just up the road, don’t expect a pizza pub experience. The food much more Euro-bistro upscale, pricier, but still affordable and approachable.

The new brunch menu includes: Kentucky Eggs Benedict with apple wood smoked ham and a sun-dried tomato mornay sauce, and my personal favorite, the Croque Madame, a modern twist on a classic French sandwich of Black Forest ham, prosciutto, Emmentaler cheese, mornay, egg and Blue Dog bread. Today, Keg Liquors is hosting a grand opening party (5-8 p.m.) of its New Albany store (the other is in Clarksville), where New Albanian Brewing Co. and Huber Winery will pour samples and pass along well-deserved thanks to Keg owner Todd Antz.

Antz has provided not only a terrific craft beer selection for years in his store, he’s the creator of the annual Fest of Ale, one of the area’s premier beer events. Definitely mark that one on your June 2012 calendar.

Tomorrow, Rocky’s Sub Pub is hosting a launch party for its new beer app from 5-8 p.m. Yes, you read that correctly, there is an app for that—or, well, for those 32 beers on tap at the riverside pizza and sub restaurant.

Partner Wes Johnson has worked with a local software producer to make an Android tablet app that helps guests make beer selections.

Johnson recently told me that it works this way: Guests who ask for the tablet can see all 32 current draft selections, read descriptions of each and make choices. If they can’t find what they like, they can its search function by entering in a beer they do like and letting the app suggest comparable choices among the current lineup.

For anyone who’s been to Rocky’s end-of-the-month keg clearing discount days (all craft drafts are $3 per pint during the last three days of each month; the effort ensures kegs are regularly rotated), tried to figure out what’s available by looking at its printed lists—and then discovered your choice was out—you’ll like this app. As soon as a keg runs dry, managers update the list electronically and the new offering shows up.

On Thursday, Dec. 1, New Albany Exchange (haven’t made it there yet, but I’ve heard only great stuff) is hosting An Evening with Schlafly Beers from 7-10 p.m. On tap will be a limited-release Schlafly’s Black IPA, in addition to four others from that lovely St. Louis craft brewery.

On Saturday, Dec. 3., Holy Grale is hosting a Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese and Beer Brunch from 12:30-3 p.m.

Most amazing about this event is learning this morning that Joshua Lehman is now the chef. Lehman guided the kitchen for nearly two years at Bank Street Brewhouse before taking a side trip to Harvest as a cook for the past several months.

“This is a great place,” Lehman began, “because the owners are highly involved and very progressive in terms of what they want to do with the business. They’re expanding next year, adding a beer garden and growing the business. It’s exciting to be here.”

Lehman’s menu is a four-course affair costing $40 per person. Cheesemakers Kenny Mattingly and Van Campbell will be on hand during the brunch.

Also on Saturday is the third-annual Highlands Beer Festival, which will be held inside Mid-City Mall (1250 Bardstown Rd.) from 5-9 p.m. Hosted by ValuMarket (which does a darn fine job with its craft beer inventory), admission to this is $5, plus $1 for beer sample tickets. The first 500 guests will receive a pint glass with the Highlands Beer Festival logo.

I have had nothing but horrible scheduling luck in the past when it came to this festival, and this Saturday I’ll again be out of town on business—curses!

Still, I’ve only great things about this one: that it’s inside on a cold night; that it’s run in conjunction with the annual Bardstown Road Aglow; that the beer selections great and the brewery reps are super friendly … what’s not to like, right?
