New Roots will kick off its 2017 Fresh Stop Market season with the Strawberry Jamm Festival in Shawnee on Thursday, May 18, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. This is the sixth year for the festival, which is the only one of its kind in Louisville.

Festival-goers can preorder berries to ensure they get some (details below on how to order), though there also will be a limited supply to buy without an order.

In addition, all kinds of strawberry dishes will be served, including chocolate-covered strawberries, gluten-free strawberry shortcake with oven roasted berries, strawberry salsa, strawberry kale salad and more. The family-friendly festival also will feature live entertainment.

All of the strawberries are locally grown by VanMeter Farms without chemical pesticides or herbicides.

“We find it very rewarding to partner with New Roots on their strawberry festivals. 2017 will be a fantastic season for our berries,” remarked Danny VanMeter in a news release. “They are looking great and taste delicious.”

New Roots Fresh Stop Markets are pop-up farm-fresh food markets set up at local churches, community centers in neighborhoods facing barriers to accessing farm-fresh, healthy food. Families pay for their food in advance, so farmers don’t face the same degree of risk as they do with a standard farmers markets. Buyers pool their SNAP money and cash to preorder their food. Each family receives a “share” of seasonal produce that feeds two to three people.

The Strawberry Jamm Festival takes place at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3640 River Park Drive. Call New Roots at 502-509-6770 or email [email protected] to place an order.
