Last time Louisville’s leading ladies of music got together on the same stage to sing the Heart catalogue, the show at the Mercury Ballroom nearly sold out. Carly Johnson, Sarah Teeple, Cheyenne Mize, Natalie Felker and Tari O’Bannon are gathering once again to belt out Ann and Nancy Wilson’s classics, and this time they’re taking over the Tim Faulkner Gallery stage in Portland and raising money for the Louisville Outskirts Rockshops for Girls.
The Friday night show will also feature special guests Brooks Ritter and Tyrone Cotton, and the ladies’ backing band will include guitarists Craig Wagner (Java Men, Liberation Prophecy), Jeremy Johnson (Your Black Star, Workers), bassist Brandon Duggins (Workers, The Fervor), keys/synth JohnBen Lacy (Bookshelf) and drummer Paul Culligan (Days Of The New, Predators).
“In addition to vocal greats like Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald, Ann and Nancy Wilson have long been a driving force of musical inspiration for me as a singer,” she says. “I’ve always known it was only a matter of time before I would want pay homage to their incredible songs and powerhouse vocals with a Heart tribute concert — and to do it with a purpose.”
February’s show raised money for the Brave Hearts of Kosair Children’s Hospital, and Friday’s show will benefit the Outskirts Rockshops for Girls, a nonprofit that gives girls ages 10-18 the opportunity to learn instruments, form bands, write songs and perform. The instructors include many local musicians, including Johnson.
She says it was a no-brainer to pair with the organization because of the correlation with women in rock and her affiliation with the nonprofit. Johnson taught vocals to the kids last fall and says she was “overwhelmed with the confidence gained by these amazing girls during the weekend. The positivity and support for each other’s performances was incredible to witness, and the resulting talent was astounding.”
