Most people don’t get gifts for St. Patrick’s Day, but this year, Kentucky residents are getting free Lyft rides courtesy of the Safe Ride KY coalition, which includes the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, Becker Law Office, the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of KY, AAA, and Lyft.
About $20,000 worth of rides will be given to the first people to plug this promo code into their Lyft app: SAFERIDEKY2019. And once you claim your share, you’ll essentially get two $10 rides that you can take from Friday, March 15, through Monday, March 18.
Since basketball also will be bouncing on screens at each and every sports bar in town this weekend, this is a win-win for everyone involved and a way to take responsibility in having a good time.
“People who take safe rides make a conscious decision to avoid impaired driving,” said Jason Siwula, executive director of Kentucky’s Office of Highway Safety, in a news release. “That’s the positive behavior we want to see.”
Since its formation in 2017, Safe Ride KY has given 6,591 safe rides over major holidays like St. Patty’s, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
“Our goal is to change behaviors by encouraging people to plan ahead and make safe rides a regular part of their celebrations,” added KDA President Eric Gregory in the release.
As you’re well aware of, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will be taking place all weekend long at area bars and restaurants — including Irish staples like the Irish Rover, O’Shea’s, Molly Malone’s, Flanagan’s and Shenanigans — culminating on Sunday, March 17.
Worldwide, about $5.6 billion will be spent during the holiday, most likely on Guinness, which sees an 819 percent increase in sales each year during this weekend.
In a recent WalletHub report, Louisville came in at No. 62 out of 200 for the Best Cities for St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations, while Lexington somehow scored a lucky spot at No. 26. We’re not sure about that, but we did beat out Indianapolis, which is at spot No. 69.
