The concept is simple, but the results are life-changing.

For 22 years, Dining Out for Life has helped raise funds for those in our community living with HIV/AIDS. Coordinated by the local nonprofit House of Ruth, the event gathers dozens of area restaurants and bars that agree to donate 25 percent of their day’s sales to the cause.

This year, there are more than 35 restaurants stepping up to the plate on Wednesday, Nov. 14, and all you have to do is choose to eat breakfast, lunch and/or dinner at one of the locations (listed below).

Dining Out for Life is a nationwide (plus Canada) initiative that raises funds for outstanding HIV/AIDS service organizations and programs. In 2016, 54 organizations — including our House of Ruth — participated, which tapped more than 3,000 restaurants for the cause and raised more than $4.19 million.

That money directly helped more than 125,000 people living with HIV/AIDS and more than 270,000 who were impacted by or at risk of contracting the disease.

The House of Ruth was founded locally in 1992 by eight friends, four of whom were Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. That first year, the organization helped eight families. And by 2016, it’s served more than 600 people.

The nonprofit not only provides funds, but also housing, substance abuse recovery services, mental health counseling and more.
