When we hear “Flamenco,” we think of Hemingway’s “The Sun Also Rises” and the intensity of the Andalusian experience
Or as author and Louisville native Sallie Bingham posted last month on her travel blog:
I had seen Flamenco in Seville, and the seeing is crucial—words are as irrelevant here as they are when anything extraordinary is displayed. Flamenco is not about swirling skirts and flirtatious glances, or even the Japanese inspired sinuous hand movements or the hip swiveling which came in with the discovery of the New World; it can only be experienced if one is ready for grimness, extreme effort, the disquieting effects of the dancer’s total immersion in her or his experience.
Now, you can be immersed in Flamenco, courtesy of one of World Affairs Council’s Global Nights.
WAC is presenting a Flamenco Night event Tuesday, July 10 at, appropriately, Caffe Classico.
The guest speaker will be Yoel Castillo Botello, a native of Cuba.
Botello was introduced to Louisville’s flamenco scene in 2004 and began dancing with Flamenco Louisville and flamenco dancer and director Diana Dinicola, according to a news release.
He trained with several local and international dancers including a year living in Granada.
Botellos is a founding member of Camino Flamenco in Louisville. He lives in Washington, DC, where he continues pursuing research on flamenco, among other cultural phenomena, as a doctoral candidate with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Georgetown University.
Flamenco night is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Caffe Classico is at 2144 Frankfort Ave. in Clifton.
Caffe Classico will not be serving dinner because they are normally closed Tuesdays. However, they will be serving complimentary appetizers and will have a cash bar available with beers, wines, and their delicious espresso drinks.
