There’s certainly a nip in the air right now, but the weather forecast for Thursday is sunny and a high of 79. Perfect weather for eking out as much outside time as possible before we all disappear into down coats and mukluks.
And what a time to re-live (or experience the first time) your Cardinals’ Denny Crum-led “Doctors of Dunk” team (and disputed creators of the “high-five”) crush UCLA in the final game of the 1980 NCAA basketball championships.
This spring and summer, the Louisville Downtown Partnership has hosted “Movies on Main”– outdoor, family-friendly sports movies on the KFC Yum! Center Plaza. This Thursday they wrap up their series with a showing of that blockbuster game.
They’ll also offer free birthday cake to celebrate the Yum! Center’s third birthday.
We talked to Rebecca Matheny, deputy director of the LDP (who was kind enough to speak to us from an IKEA while she was on vacation), and she said that the attendance for the movie series has “waxed and waned” from 25 to 75 people, but overall the LDP is thrilled with how the first year turned out.
She said the most popular movie they showed was “The Sandlot.”
Matheny said it was hard to predict what kind of audience will attend the showing of this landmark basketball game at a time that is complicated by the U of L/Rutgers game.
But she say that the LDP will likely repeat the series next spring. They may continue with the sports theme, but, she says, “we’re open for suggestions.”
The event is free and starts at 7:30 p.m. on Thu. Oct. 10.
Attendees are invited to bring their own seating. Outside alcohol is prohibited. No coolers or glass are allowed in the event area. Beer and other refreshments from Centerplate will be available for purchase during the event.
