Once again, the Safe Ride KY coalition is offering Kentuckians free Lyft rides this Fourth of July holiday, starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, and ending at 5 a.m. on Friday, July 5.

All you have to do is enter the code SAFERIDEKY4TH19 into your Lyft app under the Promo section, and you’ll receive $10 off your next ride between the dates mentioned above. Once the $10,000 given to the cause is used up, the code will no longer be valid.

Safe Ride KY is led by the Kentucky Distillers’ Association (KDA), along with Lyft, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, Becker Law Office, Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Kentucky, and AAA. It aims to help keep drunk drivers off the roads.

“As the producers of America’s only native spirit, Kentucky’s bourbon industry is proud to work with community partners to make sure America’s independence is enjoyed responsibly,” said Eric Gregory, president of the KDA, in a news release.

Also new is the Safe Ride KY website, which offers educational info and allows individuals and businesses to donate to the effort or become a sponsor of the campaign. The site also provides information about Kentucky Senate Bill 85, which passed the legislature this spring and will give DUI offenders access to effective alcohol monitoring and treatment options.

“Individuals who have lost a friend or family member to impaired driving can now donate to Safe Ride KY’s education and prevention efforts in their loved ones’ honor,” said Ali Edelstein, the KDA’s director of social responsibility.

Since its inception, Safe Ride KY has provided more than 7,000 rides to people who might otherwise be behind the wheel. That’s quite a feat, especially when looking at the statistics from 2018, which had 29,809 DUI citations, 4,717 crashes, 2,400 injuries and 116 fatalities in Kentucky alone.

Safe Ride KY offers free Lyft rides six times a year.
