Since serving their first scoop in 2015, Louisville Cream owners Darryl Goodner and Zach Hardin have been anticipating the day when they’d finally have their own brick-and-mortar ice cream parlor. That day is today, and as of noon, Louisville Cream is now open at 632 E. Market St. in NuLu.

Goodner opened the doors to an eager crowd, and a steady stream of patrons trickled in and out. Adults seemed just as excited as the children, who oooooh-ed and ahhhhh-ed at the display of cookies, cones and toppings lining the counter. The shop offers 11 Louisville Cream original flavors, including Bourbon Smoked Pecan, Salted Butter Caramel, Mascarpone & Strawberry and Speculoos Cookie Butter.

A single scoop is $4.50 in a cup, or an additional $1.75 for a pretzel cone or $1 for a waffle cone. Toppings — which range from rainbow sprinkles to homemade Magic Shell — are $1 each. And the menu also offers sundaes, shakes, ice cream sandwiches and concretes, which are similar to Dairy Queen Blizzards.

We showed up right before Goodner and Hardin opened, and both guys nervously paced in anticipation.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Goodner says, referring to several extra months they had to wait while the building was being renovated. “We think we’re ready, though … I hope.”

The smallish, long room features the ice cream counter on one side and about three tabletops along the opposite wall. A bar with stools lines the front window and offers about 10 more seats. A mix of exposed brick walls and subway tile makes the room feel comfortable and welcoming.

Goodner says they plan to open at noon every day, but he isn’t sure when closing time will be exactly. They’re going to monitor the traffic and decide after a week or two. And you’ll still be able to find them at the larger outdoor events and farmers markets, he says.

As soon as the clock struck 12 and Goodner unlocked the door, he and Hardin disappeared behind the counter as a sea of people formed a line and began ordering from the menu. We have a feeling that line will continue throughout the afternoon and return each day.

Right next door to Louisville Cream is Muth’s Candies, and across the street is Macaron Bar. We wonder if NuLu should add the tagline: “The Candyland Corner of Louisville.”
