One of Citizen Union Bank’s greatest joys is watching clients succeed and achieve their dreams. In this case, Jeptha Creed Distillery.

Jeptha Creed opened its doors two years ago when CUB helped finance a new 15,000-square-foot facility in Shelbyville featuring a distillery, cocktail bar, event space, gift shop and expansive outdoor patio for entertaining. This spring, Jeptha Creed will host a launch party to unveil its first 2-year-old signature straight Kentucky bourbon.

“I’m so excited, it’s like a dream come true,” says Joyce Nethery, owner of Jeptha Creed. “It was really a journey to get here. We started planning six years ago. CUB has helped support our dream, and they worked very, very closely with us in securing financing. They’ve been hugely important.”

How it’s made

Jeptha Creed’s Bloody Butcher 4-Grain Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is composed of Heirloom Bloody Butcher Corn grown on the family farm along with malted rye, wheat and barley. The flavor up front begins with a beautiful floral and vanilla taste, followed by a buttery viscous texture, finishing with sweet walnut and pepper flavors, Nethery says.

CUB and locally owned businesses

Because of its commitment to community banking, CUB is especially proud of locally owned businesses and start-up clients that add to the thriving texture of cities and towns throughout Kentucky and surrounding areas.

“Financing a new distillery requires taking a long term view”, said CUB CEO David Bowling. “Joyce and her team were great to work with and they helped us see their vision for what Jeptha Creed could be. We are excited to be part of it and can’t wait to taste the new bourbon.”

This exciting bourbon release would not be complete without a beautiful bottle design. In January, Nethery will board a plane to Ormelle,Italy, a small town outside Venice where glassmakers are creating the handmade bottle for the new Bloody Butcher 4-Grain Kentucky Straight Bourbon.

“We created our own custom bottle to reflect our culture and honor our Kentucky heritage,” Nethery says. “It’s a clear bottle with a beautifully reflected index that looks like a diamond glistening.”

The first batch produced will include 500 cases with six bottles per case at just under $50 per bottle. Jeptha Creed’s 2019 goal is to produce 4,000 cases of bourbon.

A thriving business

What started as a fledgling dream between Nethery, her husband and CUB has grown into a thriving business with 25 employees. Owned and operated by mother-daughter duo Joyce and Autumn Nethery, Jeptha Creed serves as a legacy to be passed down to future generations. They pride themselves in serving the highest quality spirits to their community in a space they are proud to call home.

Jeptha Creed grows or locally sources all of the ingredients used in its spirits, which include a variety of vodkas, moonshines and whiskey with the exciting launch of its bourbon in 2019. Jeptha Creed uses a process called Ground to Glass distilling along with a unique variety of non-GMO, heirloom varietal, open-pollenated Bloody Butcher Corn.

“It connects us very closely to the soil and our agricultural roots,” says Nethery, whose family has farmed in Kentucky for generations. “We actually still live on the farm and the bourbon is truly‘ground-to-glass.’  We have the cows and pigs that eat the spent corn that nourishes the soil. We’re very much about the land, soil and environment. It’s very authentic, wholesome and ultimately who we are.”

Nethery says the distillery and its new bourbon would not have been possible without CUB.

“We’re very happy and proud of our relationship with the people at CUB,” she says. “They’re local and they fit with our desire to use local partners in the spirit of Kentucky’s heritage.”
