I first saw Chicken Shit Bingo played at Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon in Austin last March. It was an interesting afternoon, to say the least.
You pay $2 for a number — only one number per person — and once all the numbers are sold, a chicken is put on top of a board containing the numbers, and you watch, shout and squawk at the clueless bird until it relieves itself — in solid form, of course. If that lucky nugget lands on your number, you’re the winner of the pot.
Louisvillians will get their own chance to play on Saturday and Sunday at this month’s Flea Off Market. Games will be held every half-hour from noon-4 p.m.
Nathan Erickson, one of the coordinators of the Flea Off, says he heard about it from friends in Texas and thought it’d be a great addition to the monthly flea market.
“Chicken Shit Bingo seems, to me, kind of a misnomer because the chicken just shits on a number and the person who has that number wins, so I suppose it is actually more like Chicken Shit Roulette,” he says. “But Chicken Shit Bingo sounds better and is more fun to say than Chicken Shit Roulette.”
Either way, it’ll be fascinating to watch, and you can get a jumpstart on holiday shopping. And don’t worry: No chickens are harmed in the making of this bingo game.
The Flea Off Market takes place at 1007 E. Jefferson St. from 10 a.m.-5-p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-9. There will be more than 100 regional vendors selling everything from coasters and candles to vintage concert T-shirts and records.
